Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is there a fee for volunteers?

In conferences past there were worker-bee volunteers and player-bee volunteers and we have been able to help reduce the anguish of the over-worked-bees by limiting the hours to only four out of the 10-12 hours of programming per day.  We also curbed those player-bees who didn't work, yet took the free access, by asking for a nominal fee.  If you do the math the $200 discount is roughly $13/hour which isn't a bad wage for event labor in this town/economy.  And, you are contributing to a great cause.

What if I want to attend a talk or series of talks each day?
There will be volunteer stations where you could be in the room most of the time or you could do some hours the weeks before in crafting speaker gifts, advertising, media pitches, sales, website updates, or social media posting, and/or decorating setup/breakdown.

Where does all the money go?
ISTA is a non-profit organization that supports a world vision of collaboration and good-will programming.  Conferences were the primary fund-raising events in the past and that model is shifting with increased competition and regional sensitivities.  For only eight conferences each year we spend 48 months in planning and preparation that costs more as we expand to larger venues. ISTA constantly experiments with new models and revenue streams to help reduce the burden for the conferences to support the organization.  We hope that the value of the networking and education brought to these events is reason enough for attendees to invest in themselves while contributing to a larger vision.
